Bohemian Locs aftercare: a 2-week checklist (and what to avoid)
By Anta African Hair Braiding | October 13, 2026
The most important rule after Bohemian Locs is simple: keep them dry and low-manipulation at the start. I’m big on neat, comfortable work, and that first stretch matters for how long your look stays clean and “fresh” around the roots. If you’re in Glen Ellyn and you’re going right back to work, school pickups, or commuting, this guide keeps your routine realistic for the first two weeks.
Quick answer: For the best results, protect your Bohemian Locs for the first two weeks. I generally recommend waiting 7 to 14 days before your first wash (always confirm with me for your install), sleeping in a silk scarf or bonnet, using only light, residue-free oils on your scalp, avoiding tight styling, and booking a professional check instead of trying to “fix” frizz by pulling or twisting at home.
First 48 to 72 hours: the rules that keep your roots neat
Right after your appointment, your Bohemian Locs look their best because everything is set and separated the way I placed it. The fastest way to mess with that is water and constant touching. For the first 48 to 72 hours, treat your style like it’s “setting.”
Do this
- Keep your hair dry. That means no steamy showers without covering your hair.
- If you’re sweating, blot your scalp with a clean towel or paper towel. Don’t rub.
- If anything feels too tight or tender, let me know early. It’s easier to correct right away than after you’ve been “pushing through” for days.
Avoid this
- Heavy styling the first couple days. No tight ponytails, no slick-back gels, no “pull it up and forget it” looks.
- Oils and creams all over the locs. Product on the hair itself tends to grab lint and dull the boho texture.
- Constant fluffing. I know it’s tempting. Touching creates frizz and loosening faster than most people realize.
Glen Ellyn tip: Our weather swings. When it’s humid, the style can puff and frizz faster. When it’s cold and dry, friction from coats and scarves can rough up the ends. In both cases, gentle handling beats “fixing” with more product.
Days 4 to 7: frizz control without overdoing it
This is the week people start getting antsy. You’ll see a little lift at the roots, and you might notice some fuzz where your natural hair wants to do its thing. That’s normal. What you don’t want is buildup or tight tension that shortens the life of the style.
A simple 5-minute night routine (commuter-friendly)
- Separate any locs that are trying to marry at the roots. Just a gentle pull apart with your fingertips.
- If your scalp feels dry, use a tiny amount of a light oil on your fingertips and tap it onto the scalp only. Less is more.
- Tie down with a silk or satin scarf, or sleep in a bonnet. If you’re in the Butterfield Road corridor commuting and you need fast, this is the step that saves you time in the morning.
What to avoid in week one
- Don’t pick at the roots with your nails. It loosens faster and can irritate your scalp.
- Skip waxes and heavy butters. They sit on the hair, attract lint, and make your first wash harder.
- Don’t “tighten” anything with rubber bands. If something is slipping, I’d rather you come in and let me fix it cleanly.
If you want more lifestyle-friendly ideas, I wrote a full guide for Bohemian Locs for busy commuters. It’s especially helpful if you’re juggling downtown Glen Ellyn schedules and you need your hair to cooperate.
First wash timing, sweat, swimming: what actually works
The biggest question I hear is about washing. My general guideline is 7 to 14 days for your first wash, depending on how your Bohemian Locs were installed and how your scalp behaves. If you’re a heavy sweater or you’re in the gym daily, you might land closer to the earlier end, but I still don’t want you rushing it without checking in.
If you work out or sweat
Sweat itself isn’t the enemy. Salt sitting on the scalp is. Pat your scalp dry after workouts, keep your edges laid gently (not tight), and keep your night protection consistent. If your scalp starts itching, that’s often a sign you need a light cleanse sooner, not more oil.
If you’re swimming
Chlorine and salt water can dry out the hair and make it tangle or frizz. If you have to get in the pool, wear a swim cap if you can. If your hair gets wet, rinse as soon as possible and pat dry. Don’t twist, rub, or try to “reset” the style with tension.
Four-season care for Wheaton, Lombard, and nearby: In winter, protect your locs from coat collars and knit hats with a satin-lined cap or a satin scarf underneath. In summer humidity, keep product light so your style doesn’t get sticky and frizzy at the same time.
Products that won’t sabotage your boho texture
Bohemian Locs are meant to look a little airy. Heavy product fights that. I stick with light, residue-free basics, and I keep them mostly on the scalp, not slathered down the locs.
Moisture
A light mist (think water-based) is usually enough. If you need oil, use a few drops on your fingertips and press it onto the scalp. If your locs start looking dull or sticky, pull back on product and focus on protection at night.
Frizz control
Use a scarf to lay things down instead of gel. If you do use edge control, keep it minimal and keep it off the locs themselves. Product buildup shows up fast around the hairline.
When to text me, and when to come in for a check
I’m careful about comfort and neatness, and I want you to keep that same standard at home. If something feels off, it’s not “being needy” to ask. It’s how you protect your hair and your money.
Reach out if you notice:
- Pain that doesn’t settle after the first day.
- A section slipping a lot or unraveling at the root.
- Scalp irritation that gets worse with oil or scratching.

Bohemian Locs aftercare FAQ (the real-life questions)
When can I wash my Bohemian Locs for the first time?
I usually recommend waiting 7 to 14 days, depending on the install method and how your scalp does. If you’re unsure, ask me before you wash. The goal is to keep the roots neat and avoid loosening too early.
Can I swim or go in a pool with Bohemian Locs?
Yes, but protect the style. A swim cap helps. If your hair gets wet, rinse as soon as you can and pat dry. Try not to soak the hair during the first week if you can avoid it.
Will working out or sweating loosen my Bohemian Locs?
Sweat can cause frizz and salt buildup, which can lead to itching and more touching. Blot your scalp dry after workouts and keep your night protection consistent. If you’re sweating heavily every day, you may need to wash a bit sooner, but still check in with me first.
How often should I moisturize Bohemian Locs without causing buildup?
Start light. A water-based mist as needed is usually enough, and a few drops of light oil on the scalp can help if you’re dry. If your hair starts feeling sticky, looking dull, or collecting lint fast, you’re probably using too much product.
Can I retwist my Bohemian Locs at home or should I see the stylist?
I recommend coming back to me for a check or retighten instead of DIY manipulation. Home twisting and pulling often creates uneven tension, frizz at the roots, or slipping. A quick professional fix keeps the style looking neat longer.
